A child may remember a formula, definition or fact and still struggle to use it in a new situation. Competency-based assessment focuses on whether a child can understand, apply, reason, connect ideas and solve problems—not simply reproduce information.
What does competency mean?
In simple words, a competency is the ability to use knowledge and skills effectively in a situation. A child may remember that 5 × 4 = 20, but can the child use multiplication to solve a real-life problem? Knowledge tells us what a child knows. Competency shows us what a child can do with it.
