Rankings, medals and certificates are exciting parts of an Olympiad journey. But an Olympiad can offer something more valuable: an opportunity to discover how a child thinks, understands and applies what they have learned. Competition can motivate children, but learning should be the bigger purpose.
What should a good Olympiad do?
- Assess understanding, not just recall.
- Offer opportunities for application in unfamiliar situations.
- Encourage reasoning before reaching an answer.
- Present challenges that require problem-solving.

Competition has a place—but it should not be the whole story
